Selecta Coffee Fund Honduras
Selecta partnered with Mercon to set up Five Model Farms paving the path for 123 farmers in El Paraiso, Honduras to transition to regenerative agriculture practices. The Five Model Farms showcase and promote regenerative farming practices to increase family income, climate resilience, and reduce carbon emissions (initially 15% after the regenerative system has been fully implemented) of Honduran coffee smallholders.
Five model farms leading regenerative agriculture in honduras
These farms will function as ‘field experimental schools’ and are used to locally showcase regenerative agriculture practices. Farmers are hesitant to shift from conventional and/or organic farming to regenerative agriculture due to yield dropping concerns. Therefore, a slow-moving approach that aims to prove that ‘regenerative agriculture practices’ are feasible is important to encourage farmers to start the transition.
The model farms allow these five front-running farmers and 123 peers to learn from the benefits of regeneration agriculture through experimental trainings carry out on the model farms. If these model farms are successful and trainings are completed, we expected 123 coffee farmers (nearly 500 ha) in El Paraiso, Honduras to embrace regenerative agriculture practices.
